I am working on the soliloquy badge and have memorised Macbeth’s soliloquy in act 2 scene 1 (the first 12 lines) I will perform it on the first week back.
The scene starts of with a soliloquy by Macbeth on whether he should kill King Duncan or not and at the end of the soliloquy he has still not decided to go on with the murder. Then Lady Macbeth comes and persuades him by teasing him and questioning his masculinity, to change his mind. Finally he changes his mind and is ready to kill King Duncan. A quote to prove why he thinks he shouldn’t kill Duncan ‘Could trammel up the consequences and catch.’
“Screw your courage to the sticking place”
Courage = bravery
Screw your courage = fix your bravery
This is a small scene that is set in Macbeth’s castle when king Duncan and company, including Banquo, come for dinner in honour of Macbeth’s promotion for fighting so well in battle. nothing important happens in this scene as it is just the part where you greet you guests. A quote from this scene is “Conduct me to mine host: we love him highly.”
This scene isn’t really an important one because the only important thing is that happens is that Macbeth and Banquo get promoted by king Duncan. Macbeth however wants more than just the thane of Cawdor, a quote from the text to prove this would be “Stars, hide your fires;Let not light see my black and deep desires.”
.
The scene starts of when the first witch shows her true evilness, this is when she asked a lady for some for chestnuts and was told “aroint thee witch” because of that she never allowed her husband to sleep again quote that proves this is “sleep shall neither night nor day.” Another important thing that happens in this scene is that this is the scene where Macbeth and Banquo first meet the witches. This where Macbeth and Banquo find out about their future. After the witches disappear Ross and Angus arrive and tell Macbeth and Banquo the good news which as a coincidence are witches prophecies which left them puzzled.
“I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent but only vaulting ambition which o’erleaps itself and falls on th’ other”
o’erleaps = leap or jump over
th’ = the
spur = a device with a small spike or a spiked wheel that is worn on a rider’s heel and used for urging a horse forward
vaulting ambition = intense (a lot) desire of power
ambition = a strong desire to do or achieve something
intent = intention or purpose
“I have no spike to prick the sides of my intention but only a power desire which jumps over itself and fall on the other”
The scene starts of with the sergeant coming to visit the king speading the good news of the victory and explain how the battle was won by Macbeth and Banquo. Also in the scene the prince and the make Macbeth the thane of Cawdor for the old one was a traitor and fought against Scotland in the battle therefore he is sentenced to death. A quote from this text is ‘As sparrow eagles or the hare the lion.’
The scene is about the witches talking about Macbeth and the battle he currently fighting and the time. This scene is an important scene because without it you wouldnt know why Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor. A quote from this scene is ‘Fair is foul, and foul is fair Hover though the filthy air.’
The scene is about lady Macbeth receiving a letter from Macbeth say how he is promoting and is promised the throne but lady Macbeth has a plan to speed up the process by killing the king. She is worried that Macbeth is too kind and generous to kill his king. A quote is ‘ look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under ‘t’. This is what Lady Macbeth says to Macbeth describing how he should act when killing King Duncan. I think that the this scence is where all Lady Macbeth does all of her ploting of she will be Queen and full of power.
